I thought i;d start a thread on the topic of artists and bands that were punk/hardcore at one time who later sold out or moved on. Do you think the music they recorded as punk artists lose credibility when they go major?

    Add to this list:
Zach de La roca - Inside Out
    Dave Grohl - Scream
    Joy Division
    Beastie Boys
    Pat Smear
    Henry Rollins
    Bjork - KUKL

I'm not familiar with Gang Green or jery's kids... I agree with Bob Mould, Husker Du's Zen Arcade is epic. Don't get me started on Glen danzig...

Another band I forgot to mention was The Meat Puppets. (their first 2 albums)
Also it's crazy how many bands that were on SST sold out to the majors. (Husker Du, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Meat Puppets, Henry Rollins, Dinosaur Jr.,Bad Brains, Firehose, etc.)

fair assessment, but they were on a major label... can't recall which one.

Do u think a "punk" or even a "political" band on a major label is a contradiction?
One of my favorite bands is bad religion, who spent time on one, only to go back to epitaph (which is hardly an indie anymore, but still better then Atlantic.)

A few I can think of off the top of my head

    Butthole Surfers
    T.S.O.L.
    D.R.I.
Corrosion of Conformity (great disappointment there)
    Suicidal Tendencies
    Circle Jerks

And hell yes I agree with you on the Misfits post danzig, I mean come on the WW fucking E!
But I feel i should defend Joy Division, they didn't sell out New Order did. They're first ep was released on a major but the rest were on Factory or Strange fruit records then after the vocalist offed himself and they became New Order they went to shit.

And is the music they wrote before the aforementioned selling out still credible?
    I believe so.
One thing to keep in mind is most times the band ends up getting screwed by the "BIG" record company in the end.
Poetic justice you could say huh.

I think that if a band that includes anarchist/anti-capitalist though in their lyrics sign to a major label then it is a contradiction.

I feel that as anti-capitalists it is hard to not be a part of the system in some way, we all have to buy things to live (unless you live self-sufficiently, which isn't possible for everyone) but music and art in general is still something we have control of, in essence it is ours and I don't think that we should allow it to be complicit in a wider oppressive system.

I don't have any bands to add unfortunately...although I could add Billy Bragg (I know he was never punk, but at least his mindset was) since he gave up his socialist roots in favour of the liberal demoncrats in the UK.

Okay I think that if you "used to be a punk" then you never were a punk. So just because a band played punk sounding music does that make them a true punk band?

Green Day started off on Look Out records, and played pop-punk... but were they ever truly a punk band? For that matter Blink 182 just because they play punk sounding music does it make them punk? If it does make them punk then I guess Avril would be a punk huh...

So what about Chumbawamba, they started off playing "punk" music then they did pop-music, and now they do folk music but did they ever stop being a punk band?

Does signing to a major make you an un-punk band? The Damned, The Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, Adam and the Ants.... the list goes on all on majors, so were they not punk bands?

So what makes a punk band, and how can a band not be one anymore?

just wanted to clear up: you can be a punk and not a puritanical anarchist eh but they are quite closely aligned, punk was a form of anarchy before anarchy got reborn in the 80's which is great as it never went away just been kicked a few times by consecutive 'great' wars(closed media, closed though, closed rights.......), thats whay they keep avin em, they don't want you to have peace and freedom so take it
