Songs that have a great build up, but then take a left turn and kill the energy partway through.

Songs that are nothing but a great buildup, where you keep waiting for the peak but it never comes and then the song's over. - Reminds me of that old joke, "What's a penguin?"

Songs that were or would be good, but have some lame-ass wannabe rapper talking (not even actually rapping) over the music in a boring monotone.

Songs that reinforce bullshit cultural norms.

When an instrument is panned ALL the way to the left or right. Why are you doing that? It always sounds shit!

I think that's something I may have done when I was first learning how to record music. How professional engineers end up doing that is beyond me.

Unnecessary guitar solos annoy me. They hardly ever go with a song and usually ruin it. There are some songs by bands that actually do a good job and fit but it's rare. Ginn's work on numerous Black Flag songs is usually top-notch. The Stalin's "Chicken Farm" is a piece that enhances the song. Agnostic Front's "The Eliminator" is another one that comes to mind. The drums and rhythm guitar, along with bass, actually change tempo and keep up with the guitar solo.

Other bands just stick a solo in the middle of a song without regards to fit or function. Even more annoying is when each song in a band's album has the obligatory guitar solo.

+1 this, so much this. I can appreciate a good guitar solo like any other reasonable person but they often just feel forced into the song. masturbation for the guitarist.

imho one should ask oneself if the guitar solo actually does anything for the song, does it add energy flow, build up or whatever. if not, maybe skip it.
