if u want tech at the level it is now u may have to pay a form of tax? oh and before cellphones there were phones and before the net people wrote letters, just a thought, i mean the tech industry we use uses mass power etc and resource and we are only treading water, at some point you have to say no and then they create sometihng new for you to plug into, they got peepz wrapped around fingers, as long as u knowit and aim to change it and do, then your on the right track, if u sit and go how doi get in contact with people while you download games, u're a problem, you have a voice!

I own a laptop and iPod which are both stolen, a cellphone as a gift from my family, and I eat corporate food though the foodstamp program. Even the vehicle I drive and usually live in is technically "stolen". I'm still a consumer, but I try to get my possessions through alternative means. I don't spend much money outside of musical equipment, which is typically purchased used or handed to me, and just random small shit like an occasional restaurant meal or record. I'm not an anarchist activist by any means, but mostly just an unemployed scumbag who has no desire to coexist with society, and would rather sponge what I can. I'm a parasite, I guess.

 

School (Tuition/Books) - Paying for a piece of paper. Though I do believe in post secondary, it's just the absurd price people have to pay for it.

Laptop - Basically makes my schooling, internet trolling, and communication with friends muchos easier.

Cellphone - I got the cheapest plan with a free phone, but they still locked me into a 2yr plan. It does however make quick communications with people easier. I live in Waterloo...at least I didn't get a Blackberry.

Ipod - Music is music, would most of us not be here if it weren't for that? Ipods/Mp3's are just an easy way to access massive amounts of it at the touch of our fingertips. I remember when I used to carry around my Walkman and sleeve of CD's, it was a bit inconvenient to say the least.

Rent - Need to pay for somewhere to live...no squats in this city.

Clothing - Haven't bought brand new clothes in years. Thrift stores.

Planting Gear - Summer Job planting tree's. Had to buy the equipment. A lot the stuff doubled for other uses like general camping/hiking/useful tools. Was able to get a few years out of the gear. Good investment.

Xbox360/Wii/Gamecube/PS2/DVD's/TV - I use them all at my house, but none of them are mine (belong to roommates). We don't have cable.

Alcohol - I buy the cheapest stuff from a semi local brewer.

 

Hey I don't mind so much about the "consumerist ways", I mean, I know I'm all very important and stuff, but not yet enough that my not buying things'll make capitalism crash.
Having been stolen things from, I have to say I don't approve so much of stealing from individuals, unless they be absolute bourgeois assholes...
It's nice not to consume and all, it's an effort (and often an enjoyable one), but it really does little difference.

Anyhow...as for my own consumerist ways...you know, I'm a skinhead and we like to look all pretty , so I'm a consumer whore for ben sherman, doc marten, adidas, fred perry and some more! Oh yeah, and beer.

 

Well, as I said, my parents are very, very conservative. My father is a private contractor, and my mother is the very definition of the capital.. She's the vice-president of a smoothie company, and she'll be COO by the end of the year.. So my mother rakes in a gross amount of income and spoils the shit out of me. I'm sitting on a 300$ Marshal amp that she bought me, typing this out on a 200$ iPod she bought me, with a 400$ Les Paul next to me.. The list goes on and on. I'd never spend my own money on anything but clothes or musical equipment though. But I do feel guilty for having so much shit, and living in an 'upper'-middle class family. ..Also, I've never understood 'Upper' or the 'elite.' Rich peoples labels suggest they're better people because they have more money.. A bit discusting.

Obviously I have a computer and an internet connection.
A cellphone with a prepay-card (probably has a better name but i don't know what)
Mp3-player to shut the world out when needed.
I bought my bed new a couple years ago, the rest of my furnitures are, except from a drawingtable that i got as a gift, found somewhere or given to me by people throwing it away.
Clothes I do buy sometimes but try to only buy stuff i can use for a long time, and i often buy it second hand.
Shoes. Sometimes one needs new ones, duct tapeing them only works for a while.
Food and such of cos. But nothing from exceptionally bad countrys to support, like Israel and USA. No coke
Soap and such things. I clean my hair very rarely (dredhead) and don't use shampoo, but the rest of the body needs soap. And toothpaste.

This has absolutely nothing to do with freedom. You LIKE music, you ENJOY music, so you buy the player so you can listen to the music. You have to decide if it's financially worth it to you to have music or not.

You seem to be confused. You want to play it for the same reason as everyone else, because it's entertaining. You can deprive yourself of fun, but it doesn't sound like that's what you really want. I mean, beat yourself up about it as long as you want, if masochism really rocks your world.

I think you're confused about what you hate, or, rather, what you SHOULD hate.

Unless you buy fitness equipment. But seriously... It deoends on what you expect. If you expect a plasma tv, and a stereo system, and pizza with extra toppings are going to make you complete you're in for an unpleasant collision with reality. If you just realize these are objects that can provide enjoyment, but that it is up to you, and what you do, to give meaning to your life, it's just fine. MyXbox does not make me a more complete person, it lets me play Halo and Fallout. That's all I expect it to do. You can consume, as long as you do it without BEING consumed. There is nothing wrong with having things, what's wrong is when it's acquisition for it's own sake, a kind of blind, senseless vortex. Kind of like Ken Lay or Bernie Madoff, who stole from thousands even though they were already millionaires. THAT is a kind of mental disease. I think the ourobouros is a great metaphor for it, the snake that eats it's own tail, the all-consuming hunger.

None of these objects are bad or harmful by themselves, as long as you recognize them as objects and don't have some sort of fetishistic fixation. This is a common misconception in the radical scene. Just beacause Nike might make soccer balls in sweatshops does not make soccer, soccer balls, or the production thereof, malign in nature. It's not the soccer ball's fault. In an ideal world we will have televisions, and soda, and video games, and all sorts of other things, and will be able to know that none of it is by virtue of human misery.

Minimize Minimize Minimize! Shop from independant small businesses whenever possible even if many of there products and raw materials come from large corporations at least your preventing the owners and there children and there employees from having to slave away at a walmart for minimum wage. Never be afraid to take government handouts like food stamps, they take enough of our damn money in taxes lets eat there excess. Libraries have computers so you dont have to buy one yourself. Dumpsters are wonderful things though i havent found any worthwhile in my new town. Roll your own cigarettes to minimize cost and taxes (if it werent for taxes a pack of cigarettes would be less than 2 dollars, they cost 750 by me thats 5 dollars to the government everytime i buy a pack, rolling tobacco costs me 16 dollars a pound and 6 dollars for enough papers to cover it not sure the taxexs but its alot less when that will last me over a month). Buy used video games preferably from a friend rather than buying new ones and creating endless excess. Oh yeah and stop drinking and doing drugs cause thats the most brutal consumerist cycle nightmare ive ever encountered.

As for my consumerist ways i do work, soon i will be paying rent, and i have a slight caffeine addiction that will sometimes manifest in monster energy drinks. I also love food and m not oppsed to paying relatively large sums for a diner veggie wrap or huge meal at my favorite vegan restaurant.

 

we will need the drugs because without them we will not be able to see the zombies duh

 

Get into indie developers for games! There are a lot of video games out there owned and made by independent developers, make sure you check them out.

 

i love buying old toys and crap at swap meets and garage sales... I'm a clutter bug.
