I may be wrong, but I imagine it is pretty self-explanitory. Punks that don't stay in any town for too long. It could be squaters, like the Autonomads or travellers like any of the I finite punks that hop and hitch the country.

I'm also interested in this, i've watched documentaries on nomadic lifestyles with crusties in it, and i have a few questions.

How do people do this without getting raped? I had a friend who was had terrible experience sleeping outside.

If they're doing the freegan thing how do they not get sick from parasites?

When my friend described squatting maybe he described it poorly but he made it sound like an abandoned house hang out, isn't squatting more like temporary housing?

Well, just be mindful of where you are. If you are in a shady part of town somewhere, maybe don't sleep there. No matter what you do, though, you may get fucked with (comes with the territory, I suppose), but I figure the best you can do is follow your instincts.

Again, this comes down to trusting your instincts. When dumpstering, if it looks wrong or smells wrong then don't touch it. You can also go into establishments and ask them if they would be willing to give you any food they are going to dispose of. And then of course there is always the five finger discount to get certain things.

Squatting isn't necessarily temporary. Squatting means taking and abandoned house, apartment or apartment complex, or building and making it your living space without going through any "legal" channels. Some do this as a means of shelter for the night, while others try to make it their long-term and possibly permanent residence. Squatting is simply "illegal" housing.

Hey there. I've dunked my feet into the traveler lifestyle a number of times, and am currently hiding out on a goat farm for the winter while I await warmer weather so I can get on the road once more. I traveled all the way across the country this summer, half of which I did by myself.

When out on the road, a person must accept that there are inherent dangers. I always travel with pepper spray and a large buck knife clipped visibly to my belt. When I go to sleep, I tuck them both into my boots by my head. I've never had to use either for the purpose of self defense. That knife comes in handy for practical purposes, though. The best way to fend off danger is to use common sense and avoid it whenever possible. As a 110 pound girl, I am always looking over my shoulder, and I completely avoid cities when traveling without a road dog.

    With dumpster diving:
    A) Avoid iffy meat
    B) Most food doesn't go truly "bad" until some time after the expiration date
    C) Dumpster pizza with hot sauce is a staple of the crusty diet, haha ;)
But, in all honesty, it is not too difficult to get folks to buy food for ya. A lot of people who give you rides will also offer to buy you a cheap burger or something. There are lots of other tricks, too; go into a restaurant around closing time and ask if they are throwing any food away, go into a food court and ask folks for left overs when you see they are finishing their meal, etc. Of course, there's always food banks.

Squatting and traveling are not one and the same, but they definitely ain't mutually exclusive, either. Squatting is any form of residence in an extralegal compound. A lot of squats are, unfortunately, overrun with hard drugs and largely unproductive, but certainly not all. I haven't experienced the squatting lifestyle much, though, so I wouldn't be the best person to explain it.

squattheplanet.com is a great place to stalk around if ya wanna learn any number of things about the traveling or squatting lifestyle. It helped me get on the road for the first time.

As a 15 year veteran gutter punk, whos lived as squatter, autonomad, and all in all traveller kid, from 1999 go 2016 I can say that for me a nomad punk follows traditional hobo lifestyle of the turn of the century, travelling from State to state chasing seasonal jobs.

Oftentimes working agricultural opportunity, or factory work.
