Hello all- I discovered this site while hunting about for old anarcho punk stuff and thought I'd join up here to see what the crack is.
I'm a 36 year old punk/skin type from newcastle way. I've been involved in the 'scene' for many a year, though I have a tendency to reject insular/elitist thinking and have spent a lot of time as a loner/drifter as a consequence. My political persuasion is anti-political as I believe that politics, per sa, are a tool of the rich that divide we minions into handy little sects and categories that make us so easy to control. Apparently that makes me an 'anarchist'- though I will never pay to have a big red (A) patch on my jacket, (oh ok- I bought a t-shirt once).
I was, up until recently, a youth and community worker, but left the profession due to govt pressure to 'inform' on families/peers of young people they deemed 'at risk' of being involved in crime, this they loosely defined as untaxed earnings, taking or selling drugs, smuggled tobacco/alcohol, etc and involvement with known criminals. In short- my advice to those with kids is to think twice before trusting where the info you give to youth workers goes nowadays- many of my colleagues 'sold out' because they thought they needed the wage. I was lucky in that i don't do debt and live quite modestly, so I just fucked em all off. Anyway- if you hear the term 'every child matters' it's got fuck all to do with protecting children, ('baby p' being the case in point), it's got everything to do with state control and creating a citizens database that includes those the govt can't reach.
I have two daughters, one 14 who doesn't live with me and is a bit of a 'chav' 'charva'- whatever, that thinks I'm a bit of a weirdo and a 6 year old who does live with me and is a proper little hippie! She and I are the veggies in the home and regularly hassle her poor mam into giving it up too- (not sure if that's fascist or not actually!)
I'm much quieter than I used to be- I did a bit of anti-fash, anti war and animal rights stuff over the years, but i always had a tendency to come into conflict with reds and other such 'absolutists' and the infighting put me off a lot of things I should have been involved in- hence I consider my main contributions to affecting positive change have been my work for the voluntary sector and the writing that i send to indy/none profit zines and websites- spreading the word, if you like. Some of my words are poems and others are attempts at novels, novellas and short stories, (though i rarely finish the majority of my work before another idea has overtaken my thoughts)
There you have it- possibly the longest introduction ever, but I'd rather spend the rest of my time on here finding out about others rather than waffling on about 'ME ME ME'.
I look forward to participating in the forums and sharing thoughts, info, art, music, whatever medium is useful at the time. Take care, spence

    Awesome intro Spence!

you sound like a really smart and compassionate person! the world would be a better place if more people were like you... more need to not only 'talk the talk' but STAND UP for their beliefs as you did in regards to your job! i'm sure that that kind of courage is a great example to your daughters.

    stay strong!

Cheers Hex. I wear my heart firmly on my sleeve, but sometimes that's my downfall. Nice to be here and thanks for the welcome, spence
