    Namenlos Biography

Punk group from East-Berlin, German Democratic Republic, formed in 1983.
They were active until 1987 and reformed in 2007.
    ---

There are multiple artists using this name.

    1. Punk band from East Germany: Namenlos belonged to the first generation of punk bands in the DDR (communist East Germany), and they have been one of the bands that suffered most of repressions from the government, who was scared of these "negative decadent youths" and, by 1984, managed to pretty much destroy the blossoming underground scene.

Singer Jana and drummer Mita had originally intended to form a girls band. As they couldn't find any, they formed their group with two guys, Frank and A-Micha, who had played in the first East Berlin punk band, Alternative 13, and later in Rosa Extra. Founded early in 1983, they immediately started performing. Originally they had intended to have no name at all to protect themselves from persecution by the (state security). Consequently, the band began to be called Namenlos (= Nameless), a name which they adopted.

Unusual for many East German punk bands, their lyrics were openly and violently critical. Their songs reflect the bleak feeling of life in East Germany, and in "Nazis in Ostberlin", they compare the communist government with the Nazi regime. The regime reacted quickly: August 1983, Jana and A-Micha were arrested, accused of "debasing society and government institutions" and convicted to up to 1 1/2 years of prison without probation; this was the beginning of a nation-wide persecution of punks.

The band went on performing in late 1984, slightly modifying some of their lyrics so that they didn't go right back to prison, but the attitude had not changed. What constantly changed were the band members: Frank Masch left the DDR and was replaced by Kaiser from Planlos, who left 1985 together with Mita, being replaced by Mathyl from Rostock punk band Virus X on drums. Basser Boris and a second singer, Cabi, came from the band Kein Talent. Finally, the original singer Jana left just before their 1987/88 Poland tour (together with Boris' new project Wartburgs für Walter), where they performed as Namenlos/Kein Talent, as the repertoire consisted of both band's song. The band more or less disbanded after the tour, with Cabi, Markus and Boris leaving.

Unabashed, A-MichA continued with Tommi from Die Schnitzlers and drummer Ameise. Tommi, who was under pressure from state security, left the country the same year and was replaced by Boris and Wombel, the final installment of the band until the final split in late 1989, when the East German system came down together with the Wall. NAMENLOS seems to have reformed, as they have released a new album in 2008.

    2. Neofolk/Martial Industrial band from Italy.Released one album ("Sturmundrama") in 2008.
