Well, I'm working on my bachelor's right now, and plan on going into a Masters in Education to teach high school history. If you don't think that's "punk" or whatever, well, fuck you. I happen to believe that I can try to make some change, if only a little bit. If only one of my future students takes anything away from what I teach, I will feel that I've succeeded. Bitching about school is legitimate; yes, they are entirely built on the premise of instilling corporate obedience. But what are you going to about it? Are you going to sit back and bitch and moan, or try to do something about it?

Me, I plan on fucking the system from the inside.

hmm as musch as i was not at school alot. i remeber i would try and make it in for history. every one was so confused. i would completly fail every class. and then in advanced history i would get in the 80s.

history was alwase such an interesting thing to learn. i wish i could still have a history class. learn about things more in depth. aww man. i miss that aspect of high school.

for the note. i was not that dumb at school. i just kinda lost the veiw of the point of it and never tried to do any work. and never handed in assingments.

ok, i have a "problem". I hate school system, and I have my own reasons. But, I also have a feeling that if I dont study in high school i will be stupid, and uneducated. I know its bullshit, becouse their's definition of educated isnt the same as mine. But, I as I said, its a weird feeling, like I'm useless. I know it really doesn't matter, becouse they are full of shit ( teachers, the whole system which tells me what to learn). I find some lessons really interesting and I'm not that bad at school ( could be better tough) - like maths, physics, infromatic sience etc. Like I'm afraid I won't survive if I don't have the knowledge they ask me to have, and if I don't support system. It's like I'm weak, but can't find the way to get "stronger" and resist. What do you think ? Is it important / good for me to learn something, to educate (whatever it means) or should I just do what I think is good?

I guess for me it was very much the same, just hanging around at school because I had to, learning whatever was interesting - and they know how to make everything un-interesting while endlessly preaching:
You could do better, if you only wanted to...
I didn't, but looking back from the here and now I guess it was some kinda mistake - I hadn't the chance to go to university, learn something important and make use of it, not only in humanistic sciences, there are lots of practical studies like chemistry, physics, biology and the like - ok, on the other side it may have become a problem to work with this knowledge to make a living payed by the industry...
I don't know - just try to make the best out of your time at school, think about what you want to do afterwards, maybe there are other ways to get where you want to go and I know lots of people who failed miserably at school and started to get education and knowledge years later while working and doing evening school again.

The highschool I went to is basically stuck in the 60's. It's the school everyone wants to go to because they always hear all the stories about how some of the teachers smoke pot and so do ALL the studens. You walk down the hall and at least 6 people try to sell you weed while 2 others try to sell you other drugs. If you find anyone outside anywhere in the school, they're probably getting high. You'd only get caught if you where being too obvious. My friend Trevor used to skip class and wander all the halls tripping on hell knows what, and no one gave him any problems. The school was mostly hipsters, hippies, and "ghetto" kids. One of the school cops was constantly stoned and constantly wreaked of bud even though he was like 80. Most of the teachers where dicks like any other school, a few where ok. The 2 worst people that worked there where the one security gaurd that used to be a jail warden, she was a fucking bitch and would just follow people so she could bitch at them, and the algebra teacher Ms.Ashton. She wore at least 12 different metal jesus bracelets and acted like a fucking tweaker. She hated me a refused to help me with anything so I basically just stopped going to her class.

I dropped out close to the end of freshman year and got my home school diploma because the Tx school system is shit and as long as your parents say you did work, than you get a diploma. Wooooo loopholes!

Meh. High school was a place I used to buy/sell weed and show off how punk rawk my mohawk was. Naturally, my mother pulled me out when I was 16. I took college a little more seriously, but it was basically a state run trade school. I've never actually used my "education".

Now I'm pushing middle age and have a kid of my own. I can't help but wonder how I'm going to take it when he starts school. I take care of an autistic/special needs kid as a job, and I see the pro-war propaganda they constantly send home and call "homework". Recently, it was the 'thanksgiving" shit, that tell the kids all about how the pilgrims and natives (read: indians) were good ol' pals and helped eachother out, then lived happily ever after in a world full of sunshine, rainbows and fuzzy little kittens.

My conflict is this: Do I set him straight (though he probably wouldn't understand anyway) and risk pissing off his mother, thus losing my job that feeds my kid or do I just keep my trap shut?

Fact is after reading this, there's no way you're stupid. Just suffering a conflict of interest. Perhaps you need to concentrate on what you enjoy &
not worry too much about the rest. Have you talked to anyone(offsite)? bottling up problems, not good. I know. May help you to see a solution to the problem.
It is always good to learn, but i have learnt more from life than school &
maybe deciding what direction(s) you'd like to take later in life, college, work, travelling etc. would help.
School is not the be all & end all, after it is done it will be your life & your choice!

Our local anarcho-punk heroine is working with some "problem" pupils too, and she's using kind of guerilla-pedagogics:
Pilgrim fathers living happily ever after in a world without natives? - Give the kid some reading about the way the Indians lived before the pilgrim fathers - and if he/her is catching flame, the reading will go further and end up with Dee Brown or Russel Means - so you get around the blame for indoctrination the innocent and the kid get's some deep insight by working his/her own way through history and propaganda.
I think the art of education lies in preparing the way of learning, in other words: not teaching but supporting the natural curiosity of a kid - too bad that the system is using sunshine, rainbows and fuzzy little kittens to narcotisize this curiosity - so you'll have to come up with something else to keep it awake.

On the other hand: Have you ever tried to speak with the mother about your doubts on the kids input?

@ bakica: Schooling system sucks everywhere I think. But it depends on what interests you.

I was always interested in science (physics, math, programming), so I decided to finish my education. I am still not sure if that's good or bad. I could have quited any time, and devote myself to studying only what interests me. But finishing your education gives you security. So its a matter of choice between freedom and security, the way I see it. It would be best for you to talk to lots of people who finished their education, and to as many you cant find who didn't, and compare who is happier. I don't know...

And seeing that you are in similar situation (with similar interests) that I was in about five years ago, and knowing you live in similar country, I do have some information on what will happen if you decide to continue with school.
    1) Everything you love about one subject can be ruined by bad professors. I was lucky to have the best physics teacher around, so I still love physics (which was my favorite of the three), but my love for math and programing faded after all the torture we had.
    2) You will learn a lot of useless crap. Worse yet, some things that seem like useless crap will be actually needed later. So be careful to determine if something is worth of studying or you only need a passing grade (all of math and physics is needed if you want to go to a related university - most of the programming is also usefull).
    3) You will have to work hard and unmotivated sometimes.
    4) No girls on science universities!

    As for positive sides:
    1) You will learn useful stuff (eventually)
    2) You will have time for social life and activism and hobbies (anyone saying you need to study 10 hours a day is lying, I have time for everything, and I consider myself a decent student)
    3) Furthermore, you will have a chance to meet a lot of people with similar interests.
    4) The other nr 4. was poorly executed chauvinist joke and a lie. Lots of nice and smart girls around who love science!

He can't read above like a first grade level because of his disability, so I can't really give him much to read. Plus he's autistic and and would constantly change the subject. The kid's mom isn't somebody who takes kindly to the slightest criticism of her parenting, and she's my landlord. She's also somewhat of a racist psycho, I've had to talk to her about the stuff she says around my son (he was playing with a stuffed gorrilla, which she referred to as his "ni**er baby") who's just starting to say his first words. I'll probably just stay out of it until spring when I leave cali for Florida.

When my son is school age, though, I'm going to have to tell him the truth in a way he can understand, age appropriate anyway.

School systems everywhere are shit. They don't try to make you able to live your life, they try to make you helpless to any way of living besides the one they choose. Glad I dropped out as soon as legally possible.

I'm in my highschool Sophomore year and their bullshit sickens me. I've had at least half a dozen items of clothing confiscated, because it scares them. My teachers watch me like I'm going to shoot up the place. Meanwhile, the whole school is full of mexican gangbangers... people spend their days smoking, fighting and fucking on campus. I'm staying in school so I can get a good job in Journalism and spread the truth. (You're probably thinking to yourself "this kid's not an anarchist" well fuck you, and I say that with love, this is what feels right) it just pisses me off thatkids can do whatever the fuck they want but a few anarcho-punk white kids, and it's a Columbine in the making

Kids are kids, regardless of ethnicity or national origin. The fact that you identify yourself as an anarcho-punk then emphasise (sp?) the ethnicity of the "good" kids vs. the "bad" kids comes off contradictory. I'm not trying to pick on you, but I doubt I'm the only one thinking this.

Yes, completely agreed, instead of educating the kids for their life it's some kind of selective program to filter out the usable, while the majority of "un-usable" get more and more neglected. Stuff they have to learn has a very short validity, only until the next written test, half a year later all the isolated sparks of knowledge are completely forgotten again. Kids are not stupid, many leave school streetwise and as experts in peer-culture, but completely unable to write a job-application or to pass an entrance test to get a proper job training, so the neoliberal job market has a near endless supply of uneducated souls to hire and fire...
The chosen ones tend to be nerds and geeks, shunned by their surroundings because of their one-sidedness,
social sciences are already alerted, even the political parties complain about their junior-offspring, often ambicious and eager, but unable to connect problems and their solutions or work in teams.
But the schoolsystem is established, the efford to change it would be great and difficult, so just let's watch it...

    @jacknegativity
Sorry to hear that, sounds like you got the full program where the mother should be the key, but left on her own becomes just one more problem, which might turn out dangerous for you because of your dependency.
And I feel double sorry for the kid, his disability would need so much attention and care...

    @butcher
Oh, I think we already have lots of Freire and Illich, a whole heap of Francisco Ferrers "free school"-writings and the local youth-brigade already justifies the efford spend on their ability to learn "free" out of their own basic need to learn. Some of the neighbour-parents have vague plans to start a free kindergarden some fine day, but the problems are many, starting with location and costs, professional attitude ect. ect.
Most of the official pre-school education is still bound by shortage of kindergarten places, oversized groups, religious alignment and the fucking tendency to "prepare for school", already selecting between the "able" and the "unable" - it's a mess.
This guerilla-pedagogics turns slowly out to be more than just a reaction on the shortages of the official youth-care programs, which tend to separate problem-kids from the rest of their peers, throwing them into isolation and preventing the kids learning from their age-adequat social net.
Without question it's really important to spread the ideas of free education and respectful care for the young ones - so thanks for the links! \m/

bits more to read - and for the australians: what happened to the Independent Schools Council Australia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchistic_free_school
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A9bastien_Faure
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_pedagogy

    and to correct gobbledigooks:
this guerilla pedagogic thingie is a more private experiment to get along a bit easier with so called "problem kids" from our neighborhood, most of the kids suffer from "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder" and are already abandoned by the official youth-care and school system and in a few sad cases by their overstrained families too.
it's more about dealing with the symptoms of the "disorder", by supporting selfconciousness and finding out individual methods to calm down and focus on a certain matter - but less about the transfer of certain learning contents - except for the few lucky miracles where individual interests help the progress.
i always try to cooperate with the parents of the kids, their excessive demands are a problem, combined with guilt feelings and shame - so the job isn't easy, but the kids have a fucking right to be supported and i think i learn quite a bit too - maybe i will study pedagogics again when our kids are old enough to go to school.

The main problem with the education system of today is that they brainwash youth into left-brain working machines. telling them that if they accomplish task x, in x amount of years, they can be any letter in the fucking alphabet as long as its within ceratain boundaries. schools are inundated with this national prideand the liberty it provides that should not be. it influences these kids to swallow their lies. its a vicious circle.
