I don't know why, but I don't feel offended or something. For me, it's just funny how they embarrass themselves :)

The jacket alone was why I started paying attention to Lady Gaga.

People are free to hold any opinion about her they wish, but I happen to LIKE Lady Gaga! I think she's HILARIOUS!

Before you totally write off her having any real interest in punk or whatever, might as well check out this video...

Fake punk. The singer writes pop songs for Justin Beiber. This was just a crass attempt at trying to commercialize punk.

I WAS gonna ask if REAL punk bands actually play Lotta Poor Losers, but you answered my question. The band in question seem alright, but I detected a phoniness to them.

Still a pretty cool clip though. The music wasn't bad, and as I said, I think Lady Gaga is hilarious, but Lotta Poor Losers has fuck all to do with what punk is all about, or is supposed to be about.

Only time I ever went to Lotta Poor Losers was to see Black Sabbath with Ozzy because that was the year Tony Iommi had his cancer scare, and seeing B.S. w/Ozzy was on my bucket list. I can say I've been there, done that, so never again, no matter who's playing.

Lady Gaga is just another major label manufactured product. Wearing what she or her clip director looked like punk to them was simply a fashion statement. On that basis, she is definitely not one of us.

Yeah, but I'll bet she actually does know those bands, and even listens to them once in a while. Maybe not, but you wouldn't believe what some people listen to on their down time.

If you want to focus on the fact that she's a major superstar that's signed to a major label and her concerts are out of reach for the average working class music fan, and you simply don't like her music, fair enough. Those are good points and good things to keep in mind, but she IS a feminist, LGBTQ positive, and has publicly taken a stand against bullying. These facts alone have earned her my respect. As I said, I like Lady Gaga, and I think she has a marvelous sense of humor. She seems to actually care about her fans, (Mind you I said SEEMS to. I don't know her personally so I can't vouch for her) Plus she's a damned site better than MADONNA could ever hope to be! (I'd even go so far as to say that she's the ANTI-MADONNA)

But, yeah, if she's riding around in limos, and staying in the presidential suites at 4 star hotels when she goes on tour, she ISN'T one of us. You'd be right on that score.

In all honesty I heard/saw an early clip and figured she was simply a clothes rack. Haven't paid her much attention since. As for liking her, we all have our own perversions LOL. I admit to having a couple of tapes by Aerosmith and Lynard Skynard during my 1% daze. I don't know what I was thinking. Just the low rent company I was keeping back then. Thankfully for humanity I've evolved somewhat since.

You're right about Madonna, never has someone gone so far for so long with so little. But there is one even worse, our own singing budgie, Kylie Minogue, who is a pale imitation of Madonna.

Never was really into Aerosmith. They had one or two good songs, but I think The New York Dolls were much better at it. Not a fan of Lynard Skynard, but saw a documentary on them, and they have gained a little more respect from me now. They grew up poor and working class, and the drummer, Artimus Pyle's politics lean towards the left of center. Did you know that one of the guitar players from Strawberry Alarm Clock was one of the early members? (And in case you're wondering, Sweet Home Alabama was meant as tongue in cheek sarcasm and wasn't meant to be taken seriously. And they no longer fly the Confederate rebel flag anymore, because they DON'T want to be associated with white supremacists. They did that in the beginning to show southern pride, being they're from Florida, but they want nothing to do with racism and hate) Still don't like southern rock very much except for maybe Creedence Clearwater Revival, ZZ Top, and maybe some Allman Brothers. (And the song Flirting With Disaster by Molly Hatchet, but that's really the ONLY song by them I like)

Kylie Minogue only had one hit in the U.S. (Out of My Head) Is she still popular in Australia? We haven't heard anything from her since.

Our Kyle's is treated as musical royalty here. Her last concert tour was declared amaze-balls by the commentariat and I think she got inducted into the ARIA hall of fame as well. She was also big in the UK. She has a dedicated gay following as well. I've always seen her as a mercenary, money hungry vacuum cleaner hanging off Madonna's coattails. Opinionated SOB ain't I.

I'm relieved that Skynard have turned out not to be a bunch of rednecks and have dropped the confederate flag. The story I heard about SHA was that it was a fuck you to Neil Young for his tune Southern Man. I no longer feel quite so ashamed of that youthful indiscretion. I actually had the 1st Strawberry album which I'd picked up second hand. I wound up selling it along with a wad of other lp's to pay the rent one time. Small world really.

Didn't mind early ZZ but they lost me with Eliminator or whatever the fuck it was called, it was just too poppy for my tastes. A riding mate of mine was right into that album and played it repetitively, whenever I visited him. He betrayed me quite badly when I bailed on the club we were in, so that adds to the bad taste in my mouth whenever I hear anything from that lp.

Early Allman's was OK but the quality declined sharply after the motorcycle accident. CCR just left me cold, it wasn't trippy enough for me back then. Much preferred the Dead, Doors, Airplane, Floyd, Beefheart, Hendrix, Cream etc from that era. Spent a lot of nights tripping to them.

Interesting that you mentioned Madonna and Kylie in the same sentence since it turns out that they both belong to the same mutual appreciation society. I think I read an interview somewhere that Kylie saw a picture of Madonna in one of her t-shirts and took it as high praise. (Not that any of this will put food on my table, keep a roof over my head, or keep the bill collectors at bay, mind you)

There is a line in SHA that does confront Neil Young personally, but, believe it or not, not only did Neil Young take it as a compliment, he was actually friends with Lynard Synard. (I think one time, I saw somewhere a picture of the band and one of them actually was wearing a Neil Young t-shirt) The actual story I heard about that song was they wrote it as a reaction to always being hassled driving through Alabama to record music. Muscle Shoals is famous for having two state of the art recording studios where many famous bands made records (The Rolling Stones recorded Sticky Fingers in one of those studios) and Lynard Skynard, being from Florida found it close to them, and wanted the best. Sometimes they would stop at a truck stop, and would get harassed by the local red necks, and truck drivers for having long hair. (Mind you, it was very dangerous to have long hair and play rock and roll music in the south all the way up to the 1980s) I still have the first SAC album. Believe it or not, I only picked it up for 99 cents. It was a bit beat up and scratched, but played pretty well.

Yeah, Eliminator was rather slick and commercial. The early stuff in the 70s was really when they were at their best. (In many ways, they were the inspiration for Motorhead, and not just being a trio either) Sorry to hear that your friend turn their back on you like that. There are certain things I still avoid because certain people have wronged me.

As far as The Allman Brothers go, the band wasn't the same w/o Dwayne. CCR is really more of a joint smoking beer drinking kind of band, but I thought some of their songs were fun to listen to on acid. Definitely not in the same vein as all the other bands you mentioned. (PF left me cold after Obscured by Clouds, but everything prior to that is good)

I knew the south was pretty backward but until the 80's for long hair? Fuck me. How could they cope with spikey haired punks. I can predict your response to that one, they didn't.

As far as Floyd goes the best tripping lp's were the early ones up to Meddle. After Dark Side it was more of a hash/weed thing until the Final Cut which was a complete bummer. Gilmour's reformed Floyd was just trading on past cred and disposable.

ZZ as an inspiration for Motorhead? I'll have to listen to them again to hear what you're saying. Interesting hypothesis though.

Surprisingly enough, some good punk bands came out of the south in the 80s and 90s, but you're right. Most people were quite intolerable of punk rock and punk rockers back then.

I always thought David Gilmore was more or less flogging a dead horse after The Wall. I found Dark Side of The Moon and everything after that too depressing and pessimistic, which is odd, since a lot of punk and heavy metal is that. I guess I didn't want to hear those kinds of lyrics put to that kind of music. Plus, I think Steely Dan does that sort of thing much better, much shorter, and with a tongue in cheek sense of humor that Waters did not possess.

It's more apparent on ZZ Top's early stuff like the first three or four albums. Plus they did justice to Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers.

I know Scratch Acid came out of Texas but little beyond that. Care to fill me in on some of them?

Dark Side and Wish were ok, but Waters really began to disappear up his own fundament with Animals [their "punk" album]. Wall and Final Cut. I passed on his solo work for that reason, he was such a miserable sod. Still he's very vocal in his support of Palestine and BDS which gets kudos from me.

Even though Steely Dan's name got a giggle out of me because I'd read Burrough's and knew what it referred to, I wasn't taken by their music. It was too slick, when I wanted raw and abrasive. Teenage testosterone me thinks.

The Butthole Surfers and M.D.C. both came from Texas, as did The Dicks and The Big Boys. (All of these bands are from Austin) 7 Seconds were from Reno, Nevada, and Jodie Foster's Army from Arizona. (Phoenix, I think, but I can't quite remember) Corrosion of Conformity came out of Raleigh, North Carolina, Th' Inbred came from Morgantown, West Virginia, The Hickoids were also from Austin, and The Meat Puppets were also from Arizona. (I can't remember exactly from where, though) The (Mortal) Micronotz were from Lawrence Kansas. I won't mention Anti-Seen, because, as good as their music is, they are self proclaimed red necks, but they are from Charlotte, North Carolina. These are the bands from the south that immediately come to mind. There are more, but I'm not remembering them at the moment. I know there were one or two good bands out of Florida. (Roach Motel is one, but I can't remember exactly where from Florida they were from)

Actually I have some respect for Animals since it is loosely based on George Orwell's Animal Farm, but I think I'd rather read the book. I have an original uncensored copy of Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, but it's a bit depressing, and since it's the uncensored version, maybe one day I can put it u on e-bay if I'm in need of some sort of financial bail out. (But first I have to start an e-mail account, and that's not happening today) I did see an interview with him once and he did come across as rather intelligent.

I can understand Steely Dan coming across as slick, and I understand that that particular style of music isn't for everybody. I didn't like 'em myself for years, and then it hit me that on many levels, they are really a musician's band, and not really for casual listening. Not everybody's cuppa, and I can respect that. But if one were to listen to the lyrics of some of their stuff, it comes across as dark and cynical, but also very sarcastic, with a tongue in cheek sense of humor. In many ways they see the humor in what's wrong with this world. As I've said, what Pink Floyd did with one album, (Or a two record set) Steely Dan could convey the same message in a five minute song, and it would be funny. (A lot of people never read Naked Lunch, and don't understand the reference)

I'll respond to your other recent posts a bit later, but I'm a bit tired as of now, trying to reorient my mother from being out of hospital and all.

I'm hitting the hay myself so there's no problem on that account.
I forgot the Surfers were out of Texas. I've got all their stuff, so I guess you could call me a fan. Will check out the other bands, a couple of which I've heard of but not actually listened to. Now that I've matured and my musical tastes have broadened I'll give Dan another shot. Any suggestions on where to begin?
