Google Trends is pretty accurate to measure social trends in various domains based on aggregated search data.

Just for fun, I pulled up the data for searches about punk in the last 15+ years. Sadly, the conclusion is that punk seems to be slowly dying. There's probably a correlation with the number of shows slowing down.

    Some observations:
    • Searches for "Punk" were 5 times higher in 2004 compared to today
    • Punk is now more popular in Indonesia and Chile than UK and USA. Their punk scene is alive and kicking!
    • wtf happened in 2014? I don't know

It would be even more interesting if we could compare with the years from 77-85 but Google didn't exist at this time.

Doubt it. Data shows punks used google 5 times more back in 2004, compared to today. I don't think these people stopped using Google, they just stopped searching for punk stuff.

Let's face reality. Our scene is dying and we have to fight stronger to keep the punk culture alive.

Okay, I'm fired up on this topic! Will be back after I collect all my
thoughts, and some research. For now, no disrespect, I would like
to propose not even using the word dying, which infers death is
imminent. Faith is real and powerful, and as long as I'm alive so
is PUNK! Yeah I use fuckin' google like everyone else, but they
and all other corporate media would like nothing more than for
US, to just become part of the HERD. Oh yeah, remember the
phrase FAKE NEWS, CONSIDER THE SOURCE! aint ashamed

A little disclaimer before pummeling begins. My use of the phrase FAKE NEWS,
is in NO WAY reflective of any support for our devil president. I just wanted to
turn it on its head, and actually legitimize it. aint ashamed

Uggh I wish everyone would quit using that term though, it makes my skin crawl, had a Mexican anarchist friend use it on me the other day, and I just slapped my forehead.. can we go back to calling them lies?

One and done, my friend! There is just no way to satirize it, without that certain
    grim reminder.

Just curious, anyone know what the Monthly Active users stats of this site are? That would be the best place to see if the followership on it is backsliding and decreasing. I just came back after like a 6 year hiatus, because I have been considering how I have been listening to basically the same punk songs for years and I want new stuff. But I have seen the punk scene in China (though spread out all over) is a live and well at the festivals I go to like 2-3 times a year. At least on par with Canada.

Anyway, cool thread for sure. Let's not talk about it dying, but how the hell we can set a fire to the scene again. Never has the world been more apt to have a good bit of rebellion than where we are heading lately.

Around 32,000 unique visitors each month ... unfortunately, most of them are just downloading music and reading topics. This forum needs more posts! Social networks are killing anarchist forums because there are more people on facebook
