Death Metal Band from Sweden formed in 1990


At The Gates est un groupe de death mélodique suédois formé à Göteborg en 1990 et séparé en 1996.

Il fait partie des précurseurs de la vague New Wave of Swedish Death Metal (ou Deuxième courant death suédois) aux côtés de In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Hypocrisy et Edge of Sanity, mouvement ayant amené le style death-metal vers des rivages plus mélodiques.

Les textes sont une des forces d’At the Gates ; pas d'enfantillages sur les tueurs en série et autres clichés de musiciens blasés en panne d'inspiration ici, mais des thèmes abordant l'aliénation sociale, le suicide et la dépression, les conflits sociopolitiques et l'absurdité de l'existence moderne dans une société capitaliste fondée sur la productivité aux détriment de l'humanisme.

Son album le plus abouti artistiquement est de loin Slaughter Of The Soul (1995).

Lorsque le groupe se sépare en 1996, trois de ses musiciens (le batteur Adrian Erlandsson, le bassiste Jonas Björler et le guitariste Anders Björler) forment The Haunted.

Le groupe sera présent aux festivals Wacken Open Air, au Hellfest et au Graspop en 2008.
