i would just work on drawing influence from many different types of music and honing your vocals a bit.

Just pretend you're in the shower during band practice and sing & shout your heart out.
That's if you're the vocalist. If you play guitar, pretend you're in the shower with your guitar.
We recorded our demo tape without a bass guitarist It obviously sucked not having one.
