What do you think about destroying the idols of punk?

Postby xhdrx on 12/06/2012, 06:22

Doesn't it ever tire you that when people talk about punk music, it's always about the sex pistols, the clash, the ramones, and some occasions, Black Flag (even then I bet they never listened to anything past Damaged and shit talk about My War-era Black Flag. That shit was tight), Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys and The Exploited? I've seen punk musicians that worked harder and more dedicated to punk rock and they don't even get half the credit Wattie gets in an hour.

It tires me on how people think punks are a bunch of mindless nihilists or a bunch of drunken idiots. If you ask me, it's because they have lousy role models to follow.
We have a scene where GG Allin is celebrated because he shits on stage and Kathleen Hanna is reviled for being a feminist.

So I came to the conclusion that the reason is that the old guard of punk is over-celebrated whilst the new guard was often ignored. No one knows Martin Sorrendeguy, Matt Domino, Eve Libertine, Mike Park, Justin Pearson, Shane Embury, Sam McPheeters, Mark McCoy, Felix Havoc, etc. These individuals formed new subgenres of punk, made punk a new voice for a new generation of youth, and what they got in return was a bunch of interviews in some zines, and plenty of people slagging them off for not "being punk"

Let's destroy the old idols. Tell people Sex Pistols is a shitty band and it's a good thing Sid Od'd. Buy The Exploited CDs by the bucketload and then crush and dump them somewhere. Spread the word on the new idols of punk. The new has to replace the old.
Punk is dead. Long live punk.

As for what this thread is actually about, it would probably be a good idea!

Best way to do it , as we are talking about punk, I think would be to write a song about it!

I care about the opinion of my friends, care about developing an appreciation and understanding of those who I have met, I do not care about the opinions of the ill informed.

For many 'culture', punk or otherwise, can be purchased as a commodity in shopping malls across North America. I, for one, do not step foot in any mall as they are the death of culture through homogenisation and cleansing. A young friend of mine was sharing music with a German visiting our farm and he asked the German what he 'likes' specifically do you like Hip-hop. To that the German responded No. But I said what are you refering to as hip-hop? Are you limited in your cultural reference in believing all hip-hop to be rap? What about beat poets, dance, non gangsta/ mainstream rap, there is so much to hip-hop. I don't ask limiting questions like that when I share music, I provide many of the songs that have interested me for along time and some that have recently inspired. I would include hip-hop, country, folk (30's- present), punk, including some well known bands. Subcultures limit our experience. And I have NEVER heard of Eve Libertine refered to as not punk enough. 'Punk enough' being a marketing brand sold in Shopping Malls, I believe they have a soda. :D

I have also argued with many 'trad' skins that 'wiggers' or 'hoodies' are actually the true reincarnation of the ska/ mod 2-tone culture of the early 70's but this rarely goes over well but it is thoroughly enjoyable.

I think that it was a well intentioned thread co-opted by Verity to troll for Punkmarr. Had to push ignore, get to the bottom and pick it up from the original. :bad:

yeah, that's a problem I realized early on. Who should be purged and who should be celebrated? I mean, I love Dick Lucas and I think he deserves to be celebrated, but what about someone like Stza or Fat Mike? On one hand, Fat Mike did make punk rock accessible for all, and his label remains independent and also puts out Subhumans albums, but some people dislike him for whatever reason.

Though I'm thinking more in the terms of getting rid of the shitty idols of punk, like Wattie, GG Allin, Sid Vicious, hell, do we even need the Misfits? Graves and Steele are reactionaries and truth being told, they haven't produced any good albums since forever.

Fuck stza and fat mike and all those others. I mean at least stza still kinda interacts with the underground though. I actually think stza is just stza and that he's just kind of a dick.

Let's keep Mikey Erg though.

Destroy the idols yes. Replace them no. In my opinion "idols" shouldn't be a part of punk. I appreciate the music and could give a shit who is in the bands, unless their racist assholes, then I wouldn't listen to them.

Some Trads are very very touchy(esp. about Ska) it might have something to do with hanging out in the "Greyzone" too long... Jk.
No offense to my Trad friends of course, they truly don't give a shit about politics, & I can respect that. What I can't respect is assholes that use the "a-political" label as a means to cloak a right-wing agenda.

I get what X is saying and I talked to him earlier about the modern "Street Punk" kids who claim apolitical, toss racial slurs around, degrade women, gay bash, etc.

If they were also christian tho they'd be like Americas Republican Party. Scary!

 couldn't agree more with you...have spoken these exact words for decades now and agree with all your list except maybe for Justin Pearson whom I believe is a tad over-rated but is still a sweetheart of a human being. I think basically it's an individual choice, I mean the majority of those bands I never cared for in the first place... one of the greatest things about punk for me has always been about discovering great bands that hardly anyone else knows about from obscure and forgotten corners of the world and turning friends on to their music...why get stuck on the rag worn same old same old?
