Some 50 rarámuris indians committed suicide during December 2011 in the Sierra Tarahumara of Mexico from the desperation of not being able to feed their children, Ramon Gardea a member of the sindicato Frente Organizado de Campesinos, reported to the press on Sunday.

"Indigenous women when they have four or five days without being able to feed their children, get sad, and sadness is so great that up to December 10th (2011) 50 men and women, thinking they do not have food to give their children, threw themselves into the ravine," said Gardea to Chihuahua state television, where the Sierra Tarahumara is located.

In the absence of food the indigenous "throw themselves into the ravine, some hang themselves," insisted Gardea.

Chihuahua is one of the states most affected by a prolonged drought, whose effects have been worsened by the winter in Mexico.

The drought, considered by authorities as the worst in the modern history of Mexico, caused the loss in the Sierra Tarahumara of 20,000 tons of corn for consumption, according to the government of Chihuahua.

The peasant leader did not say when the first recorded suicide of the Indians was, whose main economic activities are in agriculture, hunting, manufacturing of baskets and blankets, as well as logging.

    COLLECTION AT THE ZÓCALO

A public collection of food for the Indians of the Sierra Tarahumara takes place this Sunday at the Zócalo in Mexico City, the country's main square.

For his part, the head of the Federal District, Marcelo Ebrard, called for the cause and the local Civil Protection reported that they are preparing for the collection of humanitarian aid.

Ebrard Casaubon wrote on his Twitter account @ m_ebrard: "Civil Protection GDF are mustering for the Sierra Tarahumara, we should support all communities in the mountains."
