You can be both.
If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. I might have died, unmarked, unknown, a failure. Now we are not a failure. This is our career and our triumph. Never in our full life could we hope to do such work for tolerance, for justice, for man's understanding of man as now we do by accident. Our words — our lives — our pains — nothing! The taking of our lives — lives of a good shoemaker and a poor fish-peddler — all! That last moment belongs to us — that agony is our triumph - Bartolomeo Vanzetti

Do/Be/Dress/Act however makes you feel comfortable and happy. Don't let labels or categories dictate how you live your life. Besides that, labels are just social borders that help keep us all divided.
Just be yourself and don't worry about fitting into some cookie cutter mold.

If we're gonna generalise, have at you: I've met maybe ten-fifteen punks in the local scene who ever go to protests, and at that, rarely. Whereas I don't know a single hippie round here who's never been to one. Punks present a lot of posturing bullshit about how much action they take, and in some parts of the world it's plenty, but this whole "hippies are inactive" bias that a lot of punks have is really damaging to fostering effective relationships between the different subcultures that make up the left. I'd rather be friends with hippies anyhow, fewer of them rag on people for their tastes.

WTF??!! Why not be both? That way you have twice the excuse to have bad hygiene, bad manners, etc... & ya have twice the reasons to get beat up by the jocks & shot down hard by all the pretty & snobby cheerleaders at school. I am just playin lil buddy, I will go with majority rule here & say just be you & do what U FEEL!

If you REALLY wanted to be a punk or a hippie you wouldn't be asking other people to choose for you. Do what you want! Don't label yourself or let other people label you LABELS ARE FOR SOUP CANS You shouldn't have to choose between the two. Don't try to be something you're not. It should come to you naturally. You shouldn't try for a certain "fashion" or "look" or whatever. Just roll with what you like and do whatever you want to do (:

Ever heard of "rainbow punks"? Back in the early 80s in England, the punk and hippy scenes sort of melded together because they had so much common ground, and it all ended up in free festivals and nomadic sub-economies and illegal raves. Brilliant! And then fucking Thatcher came along and shat all over it. Boooooo!

I second that. Very well said
