Well, I'm convinced.

 

But being poor sucks, people become socialists because they realize this. The goal is not for everyone to be poor but actually for everyone to prosper, which would be possible in a non-capitalist world b/c the ruling class usurp much of the wealth and resources and also create artificial scarcity. But in the current world we live in now you're supporting the system on one level or another no matter what you do. Doesn't it make sense to make your music as big as you can to get the message out there to as many people as possible if you can do it w/o comprising the art itself? I mean what's the point of keeping your audience small and working for a corporation or something for a living? The D.I.Y. ethic in it's most extreme form seems like a denial of current reality.

BTW seperate subject but if you fed the cancer stricken child mentioned above enough hash oil you could possibly cure him.

No, the DIY ethic is about the realization of the current reality, rebelling against it, and creating a new reality for yourself. Not using the same old corporate/capitalist methods to achieve some level of "success" for yourself.

If something is 'earned' on the back of the labour of others it is simply illegitimate as it is essentially a reproduction of capitalism.

It is thus that DIY is the only legitimate form of labour; the only one in which coercion and violence is not invoked and backed by both state power and the hegemony and tyranny of capitalism.

The following line: "whatever level of success they desire, so long as they have put in place their "personal philosophy," or their own set of beliefs about how they should live their lives, and go about achieving their goals" also suggests this EIY is some post-modern justification for perpetuating capitalism. So as long as I abide by my own personalistic philosophy - be it fascistic, capitalistic or anarchistic - what I then reap from this is legitimate? This thus implies there is no universality, justice or morality...
