The NYPD broke a window (by smashing an Occupy Wall Street medic's head into it), but I have yet to hear Chris Hedges condemn the NYPD as a cancer on the capitalist imperialist system. Aren't windows sacred any more?

Word is that the buffoon, speaking at the Left Forum in NY this weekend, called himself an anarchist. It is rumored that later on he was overheard claiming to also be the Queen of England.

Despite the fact that it wasn't a recognized political party in California, six years ago, when I was still an election integrity activist and was at the Registrar of Voter's office to view some public records, I noticed a sheet of paper lying on the counter that listed how many registered voters there were in San Diego for each political party. There were, of course, many thousands of Democrats and Republicans, a few thousand each Libertarian and Green, hundreds of Peace and Freedom, Socialist Worker, Communist, and about a dozen other political parties, and to my surprise, fifty-five registered anarchists.

Bet you didn't know there was such a thing as a registered anarchist. (Not to be confused with a registered sex offender or a registered nurse.) It must be one of those counterintuitive strategies: smash the state by becoming part of it and voting for it.

I think I'm going to adopt this smiley. I had a Bell's Palsy attack and half my face collapsed, so this is what I really look like:

I wasn't there for two the night of the occupy encampment of the compton park, but I was there for two direct actions the following day, and I met the two people who were chased into an alley and had their facies bloodied on the video. I was at the General Assembly that following night and helped vote down accepting a permit for a "safe zone" for the city to regulate all us "crazies" into. Anyone else getting involved even a little in their local occupy? I was so happy to be in attendance at the Occupy the Midwest Regional Conference and to be rubbing shoulders with other radicals as well as the movement that was spawned by Adbusters.

I'm really curious to see how this turns out.
I find it interesting, yet not surprising, that the major news outlets are ignoring the protest.
Has anyone found any really good news articles on it? Since most major news sources (even in Canada) are ignoring it, and it's even hard to find reports on it among indie sources.

There doesn't seem to have been any violence yet, but I can't picture the pigs leaving without using up some of their crowd control weapons so that their department can request a larger budget.

i think no one should ever go to any protest without a gas mask (or at least a face mask), a bat, a helmet, and a shield. these days the mass protests are just a way to get everyone together so your photograph can go in the files.

I believe the Occupy movement has been hijacked. I had high hopes for Oakland with their Diversity of Tactics, Tactical Action Committee, and Fuck the Police marches. But one of their most prominent people is now running for Mayor or city council and urging everyone to register and vote. As if a really good Mayor and City Council would have the power to stop DHS from brutalizing protesters, stop the feds from shutting down medical marijuana clinics, or accomplish anything of significance. Once they become part of government or willing to try to work within government, they've been hijacked.

And as I've said before, I won't go to any nonviolence training. I don't think that it requires special skills and technical abilities to let the cops bash my head in--quite the opposite.

When pacifists are under attack, what do they do? Sit down, go slack.

We can look forward to many more videos of protesters being beaten, pepper-sprayed, and arrested, many more pleas for bail money, and little if any rise in social consciousness.

No matter how many wishful thinkers like myself had hoped that Occupy had the potential to be a revolutionary movement, here in the US it does not.

Many Occupiers will be taking part in the May Day General Strike, but they'll probably use it as an opportunity to register voters. At best, they would like government to listen to them, to enact some reforms, and to be a bit more benevolent towards them personally. Only the anarchists (those Chris Hedges and others call, "the cancer on Occupy") are opposed to government. The rest believe that getting their heads bashed in by the cops is their precious right and is to be protected and cherished at all costs. I'm starting to think that perhaps no real harm is done when they get their heads bashed in, as they don't have anything in 'em.
