    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 18, 75 years ago, the movement of troops and civilians who revolted against the legitimate government of the Second Spanish Republic occurred, ushering in one of the most tragic events in the history of this country.

The rebels, following the technique of the coups whose use became common in so-called "pronouncements" of the military throughout the nineteenth century and even the twentieth, was the promise of a rapid action to destabilize the government, produce its dissolution and the courts, forming a government of "national salvation" that once "order" was restored, would promote a general election in the Republic.

It was not an attack on the Republic as pseudo-meaning historians have interpreted . In fact, with the cry of "Long Live The Republic", the rebels occupied civilian and military installations, or barricaded themselves in barracks surrounded by armed people.

The truth is that once the "uprising" is established and, as they are liked to be called 'the rebels', these immediately realize that they have failed in their main goal. Perhaps the questionable actions of the Republican government (there were two within 48 hours) and the lack of true leadership in the military did produce the change of objective and thus once landed the Army of Africa, the only military force operating throughout the state, the rebels decided to go for it, regardless of the terrible cost in lives and property that this decision would entail.

Because so far the "statements" were generally bloodless or a small number of military action. This particular July 18 found the government of the Republic completely unprepared, but not the union forces that had long known of a coup plot and were prepared to fight. From 1931 to 1936 many events give reasons for the working class to doubt very much the possibilities that a bourgeois democracy, as was the Republic, had to produce the coming social revolution. Centuries of suffering exhaustion, hunger, misery, endemic unemployment, unworthy treatment suffered by workers of the time and also having to endure the terrible tragedy of seeing their children doomed to slavery, if not to disease and pain and death. Much, too much for the humanity of these people to endure resignedly.

The Russians gave the world a lesson in 1917, not far in time and even rang the triumphs of the popular classes of the mid-20's. Obviously Soviet propaganda just trumpeted the achievements and triumphs of the proletariat, hiding the terrible and bloody repression against anarchists first, and then against their people that aspired to self-governance. But the revolutionary example gives wings to the hopes of the people who aspire to live with dignity and autonomy in this, the Spain of '36.

Unamuno's words must be remembered both for their content, as well as for the man who initially supported a movement of social regeneration as he understood it and felt betrayed of those aspirations. Bitterly, yet unabashedly and courageously denouncing it as a great scythe that ended the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people: "There has been talk here of international war in defense of a Christian civilization, and I am guilty of it too. But no, ours is only one uncivil war. Victory in war is not the same as convincing a people, and they must be convinced, especially because we can not convince with hatred that leaves no room for compassion. Why not mention the tremendous hardships and injustices that have plagued the Spanish people for centuries?" Words uttered in the auditorium of the University of Salamanca on October 12, 1936, organized by the lackeys of the new fascist regime.

But none of his fellow fascists or the military coup cared about these hardships, these injustices. They had lived those together, even they themselves had produced them for centuries. Even the Spanish Church of that moment is firmly committed to the camp of the rebels, secure in the thought of the return of their feudal rights and lands put into question by a secular republic. Today, after 75 years, this July 18th is a date to remember, without hatred, but with enough indignation to avoid it ever recuring.
