What's yours look like? How have the values of DIY and anarchism informed it?

To speak for myself, I'm still figuring everything out. While I am going to community college right now, I know that transferring to a four year and being churned into some kind of job-bot isn't for me. I find the anthropology/philosophy classes fascinating, and I've met some cool people. Plus, living off of the student aid is a nice way to avoid working ;)
Some friends and I have been talking about off the grid living, which is an idea that highly interests me.
Thing is that I don't want to live my whole life on some plot of land here in this god-forsaken rural county. I want to travel around and see the world before settling down anywhere; and not as some kitschy tourist who buys mini-models of the Eiffel Tower from overpriced gift shops. I want to see what's really going on in different cultures and experience them firsthand. However, I'm a very petite female, so I'd really have to find a group of people who would be down with traveling before I could feel very safe doing so.

Ya. Eye member being in com college. Do not change your mind and don't get loan (student) it will fuck u later. You can get private ones or an angel to give you money. Tech school also trains on one thing. Your in and out and ready to fix a car , AC , draw blood, drive a rig. Think about it. Your teen ideals will be compromised. Just remember your first leather jacket or pair of boots. And start again... People are fucked !!! Punk did not let you down. People did; people and poor quality drugs...

Student loans are one of the main reasons why I'm staying away from 4 year institutions. I am a very intellectually curious person, but there are ways to stay informed without shelling out thousands of bucks.

Tech school is an option I've thought about. Learn to draw blood or something, get payed well enough make it on part time work, spend the rest of my time on activism, writing, and what have you.

I'm actually not in community college at the moment, though. Saving up to purchase an old bus or van so that I can paint it up, modify it, and travel around. My ultimate dream is to have a little piece of land to farm and be self sufficient on, maybe get some other folks in on it. We could be dirty, veggie raising, egg eating anarcho-commie fucks

Thanks for your thoughts, man. I'd be interested in hearing some of your story, some time.

Right now I'm just stuck in a trailer with my buddy, I owe him a shitton for it and he needs my financial support, plus life's mediocre here, so this is my near future. I want to travel around a bit, though, or at least go to a more interesting place. Ann Arbor's close and quite full of artists and college kids. I'm making the best of this downtime, trying to improve myself and walk before I run, so to speak. I'm trying to live a good, moral life in the meantime. Giving to charity, boycotting evil companies, keeping an eye on the world and studying philosophy. My friends and I are looking to start a band, they're not punks but they've been accepting of my being one and I like hanging out with them, so I'll make things work. But I'll never sell out, even if that means leaving them. I doubt it will come to that, though. A different friend of mine, more like a big brother, used to play in a hardcore band. He's given us his experience, some leftover gear, and so many stories of the road. Here's hoping we get it right.

Well hey, I wish you the best with all of that. Keep us updated if that band goes anywhere, eh?

I'm living in a bit of shit town as well. There's punk/folk punk shows down at the music venue around these parts, but I live across county from it, so it costs an arm and a leg in gas to get there. I don't go nearly as often as I'd like. Plus I'm going to start working graveyard pretty soon, so I might not be able to go at all anymore :/

Good part is that graveyard shift will pay very well, so I ought to be able to get my hands on a van/bus by this summer. Can't wait to get out of this place and see the world.

In the mean time, I'm doing lots of studying, like you are. Practicing guitar, learning all I can, delving into DIY projects, and chatting up activists buddies who live a county over. I'm trying my best to stay in a positive state of mind in a pretty depressing little town.

    Cheers

Wow, what kind of graveyard job is it? Sounds kinda interesting...maybe it will be the best for me :D not working with living people :)

My lifestyle...I don't even know if I can call this life, lately I've been thinking about it a lot. I work on a lathe in a factory, basically a slave. I don't hate the job itself, I hate the fact that people are "forced" to work. I think about leaving this fucking country and doing something else, or travel from place to place, but I guess I'm too afraid to make a change. But at the same time, I know I can't live like this.

    Fucking life...

Haha, that's not quite what I meant by graveyard. Around where I'm from, graveyard is actually a word that refers to an overnight shift. I'd much prefer a day shift with dead people, though :p I've worked overnight before. You really lose your patience for the dishwasher's endless stories about cop videos on youtube once the clock hits midnight. Dead people never tell boring stories about cop videos on youtube, which would be a plus to working in an actual graveyard.

I digress, I'm sorry to hear that you're living in monotony. It seems that a lot of anarchist/free spirits fantasize about loosing their chains by traveling. A lot of 'em even get around to doing it. I hope to someday soon. Any places in particular you dream of roaming?

Oh, now that job doesn't sound that interesting :D..working nights sucks...I was working only 6 nights, 12hours shift and it was so fucking boring...at least there was almost nobody around :). Well, that must be pretty iritating to hear about the same stuff all the time. Work just sucks :D.
So you worked in some sort of restaurant or something, if you worked with someone who was washing the dishes? :)

I would like to see New Zealand, if it's really that beautiful as you can see on pictures :). But it's kinda far away. It would also be nice to travel to Italy, which is not far, since I live in Czech Republic. Maybe France could be also interesting. And justout of curiosity, I would like to see some nature in USA, don't know why :D.
So I hope I will do it someday, even if just for few days and then back here to this hellhole.

    What about you?

New Zealand is definitely gorgeous. Sounds like a nice vacation from a hellhole :) Italy or France would be cool too. Hey, I live in the USA! If you can ignore the bastard government and ubiquitous cancers of our culture, it's not half bad. There's even some pretty cool people here and there. Some pretty kick ass bands, too. I live up by the Yosemite National Park. There's plenty of gorgeous woods that you can romp around in for free. I even got stalked by a bear in them once, haha.

Where would I like to go? Well, I was thinking of starting out by roaming around my own country. Haven't left this state for about 9 years. I plan to spend a good chunk of my 20's traveling, so I'm definitely going to try making it out to other countries. I'd love to see some of the historical ruins throughout Eastern Europe and Greece. India sounds really fascinating as well. It's difficult to pick just a few places since I want to see as much of the world as is sanely possible :)

Hey, good luck to both of you. See where your ambitions can take you.
Yeah, I spent a lot of my life on the streets as a slave to heroin. But the upside to this was being free of social responsibilities and living off of the land, anarchist ways and donations.. I also got to study society as a whole in the public domain and have a pretty good idea the way things work here in the usa. I'm really into art and poetry, and the result of my stay on the streets of ca. Is a big mess of anti corporate anti capitalist emotions.. It really gets to me.
Now I'm at a point in my life that im off the stuff, off the streets and ready to put my experiences into form and action. I am lucky to be living on a two acre piece of land with a house that is almost mine. I'm pretty sure that soon enough I will be able to have one or two of a number of operations in effect. I love writing and hope soon to start a band. So my lifestyle is coinciding with these hopes and ambitions, and I'm very much trying to connect with local like minded folks. I live very close to the Bay Area, so as soon as I get a job I can't wait to see the music scene. So this is my current lifestyle, a lot of time on my hands currently. If anyone reads this and has a minute please reply with good solid info on ways to find others like me online and reply if you will to this topic. I'm sorry if I responded in a general way, but that's for the obvious reasons. Peace, love anarchy

Well, if you get a bus. I'd come with ya. I'd love to travel. Meet like minded people. .. I know you don't even know me. But hell, whats the point of meeting new people if you don't try and give em a chance. .

Anarchy has changed my values, lifestyle just through apathy pretty much. Why work some job i hate for some cunt when i can live of the government (in Australia), play guitar, do tattoos for money, steal clothing / food, buy weed, sell, use, etc, there are ways to live for free, survive anyway, its probably not what you want to be doing at 40 though.
Definitely killed my motivation though and created anger issues for varying reasons, knowing how corrupt banks are creating debt out of thin air fucking us over everyway, we are slaves but expected to by our own houses and food.

teenage nihilism - street punk - politization (thru anarcho-syndicalismo, which unfortunately doesn't exist anymore) - anti-globalisation anarchist travelling circus - squatters' movement - do-it-yourself, then do-it-together - consensus decision ngos - now back to 1st person loosely organized "artivist". now i'm waiting for a eco-social revolution or a malthusian scenario, whatever comes first... €urop€ turning into a (even more) fascist super-power is another possible outcome.

a socialist approach to global problems would be a socialist world republic, which we (the "inmates") then have to fight from anarchist perspectives, that'd be close to marx' "historical determinism" (because "the state" doesn't just "wither away" after it is useless)

trying not to be a dickhead is another challenge. but you know, "friendly and polite" conformists never changed much anything, did they!?

Well truth is that insurrectionism is way more effective when it comes to handling things. Anarcho-syndicalisms golden age has ended long time ago and methods ( such as strike or picket.....) which are used aren't as productive as they used to be. Don't get me wrong, I am part of national anarcho-syndicalist group which is very close to IWA ( though we're not officaly part of it ) and I fully support the movement and take part in every action I can but you can't deny that the current movement is in crisis.

A couple of years ago I moved outta the shit hole town I was in and moved in with my sister and some of her friends. Where I was living before there was no punk scene, we had one shitty venue that overcharged at the door and never had good shows. The only thing that place had was a ton of meth labs. Needless to say I was glad to leave. I'm now living with my girlfriend in her house. We are trying put together a screen printing project but its going slowly cause lack of funds. We have also been talking of trying to have a garden in the spring, go a lot of room for one but neither of us have ever tried it before so we'll see how it goes. Been going to shows more and trying to met new people but is slightly difficult with social anxiety, this winter hasn't helped any either.

What are you talking about? What "things" has it handled?

    insurrectionist anarchism = attack

Maybe if you said it was more effective in "attacking" things i would agree with you...

    But please explain...

Both syndicalism and insurrectionism are METHODS used by anarchists to achive goals. Syndicalism has become passive and inert. And if you want anacho-syndicalism to work you need to have a registered union following certain state laws while trying to achive the impossible. I guess that i don't even have to mention that it's very unpopular amongst workers and that they'd rather join stronger, more stable and legal union ( partly our fault ). Furthermore, for union / anarcho-syndicalism you need people, which we obviously lack ( don't even try to deny it, I know well enough the current numbers of "anacho-syndicalist" on balkan and wider area ). I also believe that, from my OWN experience, syndicalism tends to be reactionary and self-sufficient meaning the goal itself is to make a union and not achieve revolution. While the movement is trying to be organized, I can say that it's more chaotic and not connected than it should be.

What I meant by saying that the current movement is in crisis is that we're progressing slowly. Really slowly. There is no chance of telling when will anacho-syndicalism start to seriously (!) change things. And don't try to sell me that bullshit that revolution isn't done over one night. It isn't, I'm well aware of that. But it isn't supposed to take us 300 years to achive it, and we've already spent 60 doing nothing.

And insurrectionism isn't only effective at attacking things, but people as well. It is a method based on attacking the system and, while I fully support syndicalism, I believe that insurrectionism will be crucial in the future. I should also mention that while I do believe in revolution, I do not believe we will ever get to that point when one can say we've really changed the world. I once read a text about how insurrectionism and syndicalism can work together, and I absolutely agree with that but I'm still trying to find it, not sure if it was libcom or some other sourse but I will post it if I find it again, it's a very interesting text.

Hahaha argh fuck kill!! All good points and ideas; except the "HIPPY " name calling. There is zero need for that. Haha. ( its Dogoneye; lost my code) I am ecstatic to see you are executing you motives by travel , creating, and resisting. Other replys scream my concern of loosing ones original anarchist / punk fist. With hyper intellectual vocabulary; one can express how revolutionary they are. BULLSHIT. Insurrection before its to late...
