Crust Punk Vs Stenchcore

Hello punk boys and punk ladies. Name's antonis and im 18 years old. I've been listening to grindcore for like 6 years and 3 years ago i decided to listen to some crust punk. As always my nerdiness had to stumble upon me and an urge to search even the deepest depths of crust had risen. I started reading about crust while listening to bands like disrupt,eom, ent, aus rotten and you know all the classic stuff. But when i saw about stenchcore i always wondered what was the difference about it. Is it the sound that's more metallic and dirtier? Cause i listened to a lot of bands that are considered crust punk and have the same sound as stenchcore. Hope i didn't confuse you with my question! Cheers

They are technically the same things. "Stenchcore" was a term coinded by Deviated Instinct on their demo "Terminal filth stenchcore" while "crust" comes from Hellbastard's first demo "Ripper crust". However, because the genre has grown in many directions throughout the years, some find the stenchcore label useful to characterize bands who sound like the early wave of crust punk bands (more metallic, dirtier indeed, sometimes slower). In turn, faster bands like ENT or Disrupt can be defined as "crustcore".

In the end, I suppose accurate labelling of genres can hold some relevance as far as musical description is concerned, but unfortunately they can also become very restrictive.

Yeah i know about these stuff but i was just wondering if there is actually a separation between stenchcore and crust punk and also how can you actually define crust musically.

There is certainly no separation in terms of scenes, which would be ridiculous as they are practically the same thing. There are musical distinctions, stenchcore is heavier and slower and can use synth (see Amebix, Chaotic End, Acrostix or early Morne) and the amount of metal thrown into the recipe plays a part too. To me, the distinction is only relevant when one tries to be as accurate as possible in a review for instance or because the term "crust" is often used incorrectly hence the term "stenchcore" helps clarifying sometimes. In the end, I suppose it is still very much anecdotal.

Haha chaotic end kicks ass! I've talk with the vocalist like some months ago and im gonna see Hibernation live in 2 weeks. But yeah crust is used lot's of times wrong and that's why i got so confused. Defining crust is really hard!
