Theres a few really good free recording/editors/sequencers out there. I'm not sure what your running but theres an open-source digital audio workstation called Ardour. It only runs on Linux and Mac but its as good as pro tools in my opinion.

The best open-source recording solution I've found on Windows is LMMS and Audacity. LMMS is a sequencer and editor that supports VST plugins and Audacity is multi-track recorder. Ive been able to do anything I could in Fruity Loops with LMMS.

Theres a few good free VST plugin sites out there too

Theres some other free Windows recording software out there, but Ive never used any of it.
