United Mutation may have been the most fucked up of the early crop of DC hardcore. Musically more a kin to the mighty Void than say Government Issue. This EP is hands down the most twisted to be released by Dischord at the time and maybe ever. For fans of Die Kreuzen and other fucked up hardcore. Enjoy.

    United Mutation Biography

    WEBSITE
United Mutation is a Punk/HC band formed in Northern Virginia out of the foundations of a bedroom garage band called Dark Self Image (also known as DSI - which was later used as the name of their label) and played their first gig as "UM Halloween" in 1982 with Media Disease.

The classic line-up was as follows:
    Jay Fox: Bass
    John Fox: Guitar
    Mike Brown: Vocals
    Billy Fox: Drums

Band members: Jay Fox, Steve Kirkland, John Fox (3), Mike Brown (17)
Band ex-members: , Michael Salkind, Sean Sumner, Bill Fox (5)
    ---

United Mutation was one of the best and most strangely unique bands to come out of the early 80's DC Hardcore scene. Their sound ranged from fast and chaotic in their demo beginnings to an atmospheric, melodic groove on their final release, "Rainbow Person"(a punk rock masterpiece). The originality in their music certainly set them apart from the other bands of the time, but what many fans and fellow hardcore enthusiasts believe to be the most significant about UM's sound in particular is the rough, crazed vocals of frontman Mike Brown that are claimed to be the first ever done in that style. There were plenty of hardcore "singers" who shouted and screamed, but nothing as guttural or gruff as the vocals for United Mutation. With a completely original style, they performed a breed of hardcore punk that was all their own. Yet, sadly, this also caused them to be one of the most overlooked groups of this classic era...most likely because they were too different from their musical peers and way ahead of their time. As UM drummer Billy Fox once said in an interview, "Face it, we were not cool. We weren't hated, we were just not considered "in."
