    VA Biography

    DJ and producer from Norway.

    Training to become a pianist, Olsen enrolled at a local music school, but to his disappointment there wasn't much jazz being taught there. Gradually leaving the musical career path, he later moved on to study physics at the University Of Oslo. Growing up in the rural village of Mjøndalen, dance music influences were scarce. However, during the early-mid 1990s dance culture sneaked its way into even the most remote parts of Norway, thanks to [a=The Prodigy] and national radio stations filling prime time slots with underground jocks Olle Abstract and Pål "Strangefruit" Nyhus from Mungolian Jetset.

    On the more personal level, Terje’s sister was a close friend of the late Tore "Erot" Kroknes, who was known for his releases on Telle Records and his production work for his girlfriend Annie on the classic disco pop single "The Greatest Hit". The tapes his sister brought home from Erot to the young Terje became a major source of inspiration for him. Playing around in his early teens on a cheap PC together with his mate Dølle Jølle, Terje made his first attempts on house and jungle music, which they played from cassette tapes on junior high school-dances.
    Olsen reckoned that disco was all a bit silly – until Norwegian disco pioneer Bjørn Torske’s "Sexy Disco" caught his ears in 1999 and inflamed his love for the disco sound. In 2001 Olsen got in touch with Prins Thomas, and was also introduced to Hans-Peter Lindstrøm in Oslo.

    Inspired of former UK generation of disco heads, Terje soon began to make his own re-edits of old disco records and moved on to his own productions.

    According to the liner notes to V.A.'s debut album, One by One, the initials in the group's name stand for "Very Artistic." After listening to their debut, V.A. should stand for "Very Average." Like too many R&B male vocal groups before them, V.A. breaks out every tired romantic cliché and transforms them into an entirely forgettable debut. While the trio shows glimpses of vocal ability, that ability is washed out by production that manages to be both boring and overbearing. The group relies on the production team of the Characters, who have had past successes with artist such as Tyrese and Brian McKnight. It seems the Characters are saving their top material for those more established artists and are using their leftover tracks for V.A. On top of the tepid production, they tacked on meaningless lyrics to songs such as "Breathe" and "I Want You for Myself." Perhaps if V.A. was given some better material to work with they would be able to come close to reaching their potential. But after listening to One by One, it's hard to imagine how this group could have anything new to offer.

    Swedish label and series. The Absolute brand was established in 1986 when the first Absolute Music (6) compilation was released. In 1990 the first other Absolute compilation was released, and in 1999 it became a label, replacing EVA Records (5) which remained the copyright holder. The Absolute brand was owned by EMI Music Sweden AB from 1991 to 2013 when they became part of Warner Music Sweden AB, and was licensed exclusively to EVA Records until 2015 when they ceased to exist.

    While mainly a label, this is also a series for Swedish Absolute releases that aren't part of any other Absolute series (see the "Sublabels" below).
