ALTERNATIVE Biography

WEBSITE
Best known as lead singer of popular British rock group [a=Queen]. Born 5 September 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar, died 24 November 1991 in Kensington, London, UK.

Born as Farrokh Pluto Bulsara to Parsi parents Bomi and Jer Bulsara, he attended St. Peter's boarding school near Bombay and formed his first school band ("The Hectics") where he played piano.
At age 17 the Bulsara family fled to England during the Zanzibar revolution and Freddie (as he began calling himself) took up studies in art design. He also formed a band called "Ibex" (later renamed to "Wreckage") but they failed to take off. Soon after he joined another band called "Sour Milk Sea" but it also disbanded.

In 1970 he met [a=Brian May] and [a=Roger Taylor] who at the time were going under the name Smile. Quickly taking full charge, he changed the name to "[a=Queen]", and with his art design education designed the band's logo. It was also around this time that he changed his name to Frederick Mercury by deed poll.

As flamboyant a performer he was on stage, Mr. Mercury was equally adept at songwriting; it was his "Bohemian Rhapsody" that propelled the band to superstardom.

Between the late 1970's and early 1980's, Freddie took a break from the band to pursue a solo career, spending much time in Munich and New York. In 1987 he was diagnosed with HIV. Despite his illness he still recorded with Queen to finish one last album ("[r=889990]") and his last recorded song, "Mother Love" (which was to appear on the posthumous "[r=1383329]" album). As the disease took hold, public appearances and subsequent videos revealed a very thin Freddie -- yet he insisted on keeping his illness a secret.

On 24 November 1991, he died in his Kensington home, one day after announcing his illness, aged 45.

Label - Parlophone

Multinational label.
Label Code: bLC 0299 / LC 00299/b
bPlease note, many Parlophone issues also carry an EMI logo. This is not a label and EMI should not be added as a label, it instead indicates that Parlophone was part of the EMI Group./b

Parlophone is an anglicization of the German Parlophon label, registered as a trademark in 1902 by Max Straus and Heinrich Zuntz of bSalon Kinematograph Co. GmbH/b, later merged into Carl Lindström A.-G.. The first Parlophon records are pressed in 1910.

By 1923, Parlophone proper appears in London administered by English Lindström branch known as l311921, Parlophon records were pressed in London and sold locally. By 1926 extended operations extended to press for export in Australia (#cat A) until the australian factory Parlophone Co. Ltd. was created somewhere the next year. These companies were subsequently taken over by l97841 in 1927, following its acquisition of l275192 in 1926, thus becoming a constituent part of l293204 (EMI) when that company merged with l253617 in 1931.

The label largely operated as a Jazz and Novelty label until manager, George Martin, signed the The Beatles in 1962. As a result of its subsequent success and profile, the label was earmarked for phasing out in 1973 in favour of EMI (the label), however the parlophone imprint continued to be used by registered trademark owner EMI Records Ltd. and affiliated companies.

In September 2012 following the acquisition of l1330982's US and Asian interests by Universal Music Group, Parlophone and the former EMI Records Ltd. were merged as the l806790 (PLG Holdco Ltd.) and spun off to be sold.

They were sold to Warner Music Group in March 2013.
The Parlophone label is now owned by Parlophone Records Ltd., the re-named EMI Records Ltd., itself a subsidiary of Warner Music International.

The Beatles were not part of the Parlophone Label Group and their catalogue was acquired by Universal.

bThis label contains releases on multinational markets. Do NOT create imprints for different countries. Cover that information on new releases with the country field and with notes about the release (releasing company, ℗&© note, mechanical rights etc.)./b
